As usual, you are peddling a lie - a soft version of the nicely-packaged propaganda version of the lie - that US mass media is "responsible" and "tells truth" (although, if you attempted to reply at all, your first shot would undoubtely be "I said no such thing, i was talking about NYTimes checking only" - I understand this possible attempt at evasion)
No, US corporate mass media LIES EVERY DAY virtually with each news item, and direct distortion of facts IS NOT the major technique for that (although it is present quite a lot - try to check on the number of the "victims of Stalinism" or on "the Holocaust" or even refer to the NYTimes archives about the original publications about the threat of death for the 6 million Jews in 1919? - or early 1920s rather)
Or take more recent examples of "protests" in in Russia with palm trees in the background, or even the most recent supposed anti-Putin protests (in warm weather) where people wore winter clothes.
Or even - Iraq, Lybia and today Syria, in which enourmous lies (attacks and "taken" cities which did not happen in reality, up to and including plywood decorations in which "the victory" of the West-created and West-led mass murderers is staged for the "big 6" mass-media corporations in the USA and around the world) Where is your "fact checking" for all of them then, including the NYT?
But more directly related to our topic is the well-known story about a couple of Fox journalists, which wanted to make a series of 4 programmes on Monsanto and rBST. In popular rendition the result of court actions is interpreted as "no obligation to tell truth" on the part of Mass Media, but to be pedantic, here is the link to the details: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Akre
There is no obligation to tell the truth which anybody can enforce over a corporation. It is CORPORATIONS INTERNALLY who are enforcing "fact-cheking" FOR THE OBVIOUS figures and facts NOT TO INTERFERE with the real distortion and lies. The only reason for fact-checking is not to become too obvious and easy targets in their professional, day-to-day, 24x7, telling of whoppers.
