Мне понравилась история из книжки A Shovel of Stars Теда Моргана про колонизацию запада США (про колонизацию востока США - первый том, Wilderness at Dawn):
On August 8, 1873, Tuscon was the scene of a bilingual public lynching. For three Mexicans who had murdered a pawnbroker and his pregnant wife, a four-rope gallows was improvised on the plaza. The fourth was for John Willis, who had been sentenced to death for murder, and whom the lynchers thought convenient to expedite with the others.
Since the mob, as well as the lynchees, were both Hispanic and Anglo, a public-spirited citizen jumped on the platform to address those gathered in both languages.
"What punishment do the prisoners deserve?" he asked. "¿Qué castigo merecen los prisioneros?"
The crowd responded with "Death!" and "¡Que mueran!"
Duffield, who had been drinking, spoke up: "You can hang a Mexican, and you can hang a Jew, and you can hang a nigger, but you can't hang an American citizen."
From the crowd came shouts of "Jug him!"
So Duffield was tied up and guarded while the four prisoners were hoisted on top of horse-drawn wagons with halters around their necks. The horses trotted off followed by the wagons, leaving the men dangling. [...]
Это то, чем был Юго-Запад США, когда он начинал быть таковым. Что изменилось с тех пор?
