Когда в 1997 году Гонконг стал китайским, его жителям были обещаны политические свободы и широкая автономия до 2047 года. Гаранторами этого вызвались быть Великобритания и США.

Как эвфемистически пишет New York Times, "сегодня они кажутся менее заинтересованными в этих обязательствах".

It doesn't matter. It's enough that Supreme Justices had decided the outcome just 14 year ago. By the way, US Supreme court is a rough equivalent of Politburo:)

As for the 2000 election, any close election is, really, a lottery. That election was well within the margin of error of the electoral system. Tossing a coin, perhaps, was more intellectually honest than thinking up a rational. But, in any case, that election was not really decided by the Supreme Court.

If you want to find a truly stolen US election, you would have to go back to 1876 (Hayes vs. Tilden). That one was truly a pretty baby. But that was a very different age indeed.

I am familiar with 1876 story, I have read Gore Vidal:)
In my opinion the story of 2000 was not that much different. But I am an avowed cynic of all electoral systems, after all.
