Stuyvesant High School is in fact named for Peter Stuyvesant. It is a public school, meaning free, but requires passing a test to get in. There are two others; a lower mark gets you to Brooklyn Tech, and beneath is Bronx Science. All three are excellent.
The souls... It was Thomas Mann that I was reading at the time, his magnificent Doctor Faustus. I have also read Goethe's and Marlowe's, but Mann made the biggest impression. Nobody wanted to touch this 'case' so the facility's cook was empowered to be my judge. The punishment I received, 90 days, was the same as my cellmate's. He threw a tray of hot cake at a civilian employee. However, I read Proust during that time; a life changing work. Only The Brothers Karamazov has had as visceral an effect on me. Thanks again.
